The locals were there.
Xavier Rudd played.
And local Federal MP, Darren Cheeseman wore his red shirt and clapped during the speeches.
And the pro development forces met in a phone box on the other side of town.
I'll spell it out for the Surf Coast councillors and local state MP Michael Crutchfield. If you support, or remain silent about this issue, you can kiss your political careers goodbye.
UPDATE
Crutchy sees the light.
JOINT STATEMENT BY*
*MICHAEL CRUTCHFIELD AND DARREN CHEESEMAN*
*REGARDING SPRING CREEK DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL*
The Surf Coast Shire is responsible for determining where and how growth
occurs in Torquay/Jan Juc.
The Spring Creek corridor has been identified for long term growth in
various local government policy documents since 1980.
The recent Torquay/Jan Juc Structure Plan of 2007 – adopted by council
in May, 2007 – confirmed the Spring Creek corridor as the preferred
growth area.
The Surf Coast Shire is responsible for determining where and how growth
occurs in Torquay/Jan Juc.
In light of the recent approval of the Armstrong Creek development which
will increase the regions population by around 54,000 we believe the
Surf Coast Shire officers should review the current proposed Spring
Creek Urban Growth Framework Plan that is on exhibition as the community
and our view is that the current frame work plan is excessive.
We have significant reservations about the proposal and we call on Surf
Coast Shire to revise it in light of the approval of the massive
Armstrong Creek development and its potential pressures on Torquay and
the rest of the surf coast.
We believe council officers have been too enthusiastic to put this plan
on exhibition without taking into account the full effects of the
Armstrong Creek development and its impacts on Torquay and call on
council to consider these development pressures in its deliberations.
We believe Council need to revise the draft Spring Creek Urban Framework
Growth Plan to ensure that any development takes into account these
recent developments within the broader region.
While we appreciate the new councillors have had this proposal foisted
upon them, we are confident they will revise the proposal in light of
the Armstrong Creek approvals.
Our concerns have been conveyed to council and we continue to encourage
Surf Coast residents to continue submitting their concerns to the Surf
Coast Shire before the submission deadline of March 2, 2009 so that the
communities views can be taken fully into account in shires planning
deliberations.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment and Water

How many of the people at the rally are recent residents who have moved into houses and developments constructed in the past five years?
Just asking.
Probably a few, but the majority were not "draw-bridgers".
Most were surf coast lifers with parents pushing up daisies in the local bone yard.
YEH...LIKE WE REALLY NEED MR RUDD TO GRACE THE TOWN WITH HIS PRESENCE AFTER FLYING THE WORLD FOR MONTHS ON END AND ADDRESS THIS IMPORTANT LOCAL ISSUE. THANK MR RUDD, US TRUE LOCALS CANNOT COPE WITHOUT YOU...LOCALS KNOW THAT HE HAS BUTCHERED THE BUSH HIMSELF TO GET HIS LITTLE SPOT OF PARADISE IN JAN JUC...BUT ITS NOT OK TO TURN SOME PADDOCKS INTO HOUSING FOR OTHERS. I KNOW THE GUY WHO BULLDOZED HIS ROAD INTO THE BUSH TO GET TO HIS BIG HOUSE...AND WE'RE TALKING REAL BUSH HERE, NOT PADDOCKS...
OH PLEASE, HELP US XAVIER, OH GIFTED ONE
I AM AGAINST THE DEVELOPMENT, BUT DONT NEED A ROCK STAR TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE ISSUE FOR THEIR OWN BENEFIT- IS SUCCESS MEASURED IN RECORD SALES? HE HASNT PROVIDED ONE COGENT ARGUMENT AGAINST THE DEVELOPMENT, AND THE OTHER SPEAKERS PRATTLED ON ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING ETC, NOT THE REAL ISSUE- WHICH IS HOW DO WE, COLLECTIVELY, WANT TORQUAY TO LOOK LIKE IN 20 YEARS. I GREW UP IN TORQUAY AND WENT TO TORQUAY PS IN THE 80'S AND CAN TELL YA THAT THE PLACE IS A LOT DIFFERENTER...HEY WHERE WERE THE OBJECTIONS TO THE INDUSTRIAL PARK? OR THE SANDS? OR ANYTHING ELSE FOR THAT MATTER...IF YOU WERE A TRUE LEFTIE, YOU WOULD QUESTION THE GUY WHO IS USING THIS ISSUE TO GET HIS OWN PUBLICITY- HE MADE THE AGE, THE ADDIE AND THE LOCAL RAG..."I HAVE A GIFT"...WHAT A LOAD OF SHIT...C'MON LEFTIE BOY, KEEP IT REAL
Wow, TLS.
I've never seen a display of Tall Poppy Syndrome like that.
What did Xavier Rudd do to you at TPS? Steal your pencil? Maybe he dropped in on you at your one and only barrel in your surfing career?
Ooh and BTW, a true local surfer doesn't have to call himself a local in Torquay. We know who are the locals and who are the pretenders.
Have you got anything positive to say, or did you just drop in for a whinge?
...always the critic, never the criticised?
Just pointing out an obvious flaw in the logic of a person who has used a local issue as a media opportunity. I would have thought contributing his obviously prodigious talents towards a bushfire benefit would have been the more ethical thing to do...or another Narana publicity event (what happened to the cash there- a hill at the school?...great publicity for the family that polluted the place with posters, though)
So...what are the environmental values of the site? Last time I drove past, I saw bare paddocks, no? The scheme leaves the valley alone largely, places some nice community centres here and there...seems reasonable.
And hasn't that former Mayor's family owned the site for generations...surely they have the right to develop- even if Gunn's don't.
And, who knows what Torquay will look like 20 yrs from now? 20 yrs ago, Juccers was paddocks, now its all houses.
Not a whimper of protest when Tq north was subdivided (developers making millions) into industrial estate- no protests there? Oh, maybe the Ripsilver mafia may have benefited from it. Now, we will have a traffic light before entering town, and see a bunch of ugly sheds as our "gateway" to the GOR.
Vested, and conflicted interests prevail in this corporate HQ masquerading as a humble seaside village...try surfing Bells in a few weeks time when ripsilver take the place over for a corporate event...no protests there from Surfers, or locals?
I note in your response, an absence of argument...just leftie tall poppy crapology.
Please Mr. Leg, some intelligence in your rantings from now on?
Something positive...Torquay is the place everyone wants to live, including yourself from the sounds of it. In 20 years, when Spring Creek is developed (after this attempt fails), the sun will still shine (very brightly)...and the climate-changed waters will provide a wonderful new surf break, called Springo's? Maybe it will be a Right, we need more Rights, leftie!
...and don't start me on the Torquay Christian Mafia.
check out the SC times today...seems that our former Mayor/ Chief Executive of the Conflict of Interest Conspiracy has put forward a logical and cogent argument for the development...unlike Mr Rudd, who wasted column space talking about his gifts.
Therein lies my point, Leftie
Haven't seen it yet.
But do elighten me about your mafia conspiracies. I could do with a laugh.
So, Leggy
What do you think of Mr Rudd selling his Eco coastal retreat...http://www.domain.com.au/Public/PropertyDetails.aspx?adid=2007864725
Their over-active media agent has milked the media with stories on the house in Rolling Stone, Sanctuary mag, The Age and local rags. The general message in all these marketing attempts is to use the house to market Rudd's eco-creds, which, cynical me thinks is rather self-serving. Now, he has the house for auction, we can only surmise that he has actually built the house for profit and has engaged in an extended cross promotional campaign to increase the auction response (read $$$$) whilst increasing his eco-cred profile (read make $$$)
whattaya reckon? either way, he's not staying around for Spring Creek...which reminds me of the point above, that he was actually spearheading this to increase his eco-cred (read $$$). can you now see my point?
