News from Ronland

Well folks it's mayoral voting time again, and that means it time for Surf Coast Shire councillor, Ron Humphrey, to throw his annual tantie.

Ron bitches and moans about "back room deals" that puts anyone but him in the mayoral chair.

News flash for you Ron. It's called local politics. Ron seriously expects all councillors to go into the chamber not knowing who their fellow councillors are going to vote for. In the real world, councillors discuss the mayor issue and the most appropriate candidate (ie not Ron Humphrey) gets the job well before any vote is taken.

This year it will be Cr Dean Webster if the current mayor steps down. I'll be honest here. Cr Webster worried me at first. He stood for the "Save the Surf Coast" team which consisted of prominent land owners, Ron, and Ron's daughter. This ticket had a massive budget and used questionable tactics.

Since Webster got in, he has been a pleasant surprise. He works hard, is involved in numerous committees, knows the issues, and makes informed decisions.

It's no wonder he is being groomed for mayor.

Ron on the other hand would, without doubt, be the worst, most embarrassing mayor in the country. He honestly thinks he has leadership qualities.

The reality of Ron's "qualities", and the impression the public have of him are totally the opposite. Apart from a small cadre of angry prudish pensioners, Ron has virtually no public support. He got onto council on a tiny primary vote, and he was the last councillor elected thanks to a Family First-like preference deal.

It is this reason, in combination with the normal lobbying of councillors why Ron will never ever be mayor of the Surf Coast.
Oh and being a genuinely deluded fuckwit doesn't help either.

But do you know what the funniest thing about Ron is?

With no state or federal MPs, Ron is the highest ranking official in the Liberal Party in the Greater Geelong Region. Ha Ha.

I guess the level of desperation is higher this year.

Am I right in believing that Ron will be up for re-election before he gets another crack at being Mayor?

You would be guessing right bendigo.

I really don't know if he will stand again after achieving nothing in four years.

Local council elections are pretty much ignored by the vast majority of residents. About the only research anyone does is read the 150 word candidate statement, so name recognition goes a long way. Ron's permanent whinging in the press may help his re-election cause, but he will have to do it on his own.

I actually can't think of any current councillors who won't be putting Ron last on their tickets.

He can count on a few votes from The Esplanade mafia who stand for nothing other than their selfish wants.

If VSU hasn't totally wrecked them, the fall-back position for the Liberal Party could be a Liberal Student on the SRC at Deakin Uni standing for the "More Beer" Party.
